Seems to be whether you are here in the Phoenix Metro or in the beautiful countryside of Montana ugly builder base oak cabinets seem to be a common find. It can definitely affect the resale value of your home for the worse. Tried and true, KITCHENS sell homes. We found a great DIY on this subject to help you WOW your kitchen for under $600 and add a thousands in value.

We found a mom in Montana, Lisa Hensley, who did a little DIY herself to jazz up her kitchen.

Dealing with the grain of the cabinets was the first thing she addressed and chose a product called “Aqua Coat Clear Grain Filler”. She says that “It doesn’t actually fill the grain, but seals it so the paint goes on more smoothly. YOU WILL STILL SEE GRAIN LINES IN YOUR PAINTED PIECE. But they will be textural, not light/dark.”

Sanding between coats is also an important piece for getting that quality finished look. Lisa says, “Learn to love sandpaper. I used 2 coats of sealer, 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of paint, and 2 coats of clear poly sealer. I had to sand between every coat. Every. Single. Coat.”

Lisa’s Cost: The cost for paint, paint sprayer, and new hinges and knobs totaled less than $500. We suggest getting an electric sander to help speed up sanding process. They run anywhere from $30-$70 at your local hardware store.
